The latest Nature Index–Energy 2025 report, published on Nature’s website, shows that research output in affordable clean energy has surged across the Asia-Pacific region in recent years, doubling its global share. China has been the dominant contributor in this field.

According to the report, released on March 19, global research output related to affordable clean energy in the Nature Index grew by more than 200% between 2015 and 2023. A broader database tracking multidimensional data reflects a similar trend, with global research output in this area increasing by nearly 470% from 2010 to 2023.

However, growth has not been evenly distributed worldwide. From 2019 to 2023, the Asia-Pacific region doubled its share of research output in affordable clean energy, while other regions saw little change. Between 2019 and 2024, China’s research output in this field far outpaced that of any other country, accounting for more than three times the share of the United States, which ranked second. China’s leadership is further underscored by its dominance in institutional rankings: 63 of the world’s top 100 energy research institutions during this period were based in China, and all of the top 20 were Chinese.

Simon Baker, Chief Editor of the Nature Index, noted: “China’s massive investment in clean energy has fueled rapid growth in its research output. Its influence and leadership in this field are also evident in global scientific collaboration, with China establishing numerous high-profile research partnerships.”
