The China National Administration of Coal Geology (CNACG) recently took part in a conference in Xi’an, Shaanxi Province, focused on advancing ecological protection and high-quality development in the Yellow River Basin. At the event, CNACG released the White Paper on Ecological Protection and High-Quality Development in the Yellow River Basin and introduced seven key technological innovations. These include ecological restoration techniques for open-pit mines in high-altitude, cold regions; critical “water-controlled coal mining” technology; an integrated waste treatment system for sustainable mining; intelligent spatiotemporal ecological monitoring technology; and advanced geophysical exploration methods for safer, more efficient coal production.

The Yellow River Basin is not only a vital ecological shield but also a major hub for coal, petroleum, and other mineral resource development. Striking a balance between resource extraction and environmental protection is crucial. CNACG has made significant breakthroughs in this field, including:

Permafrost and Vegetation Restoration: Building on ongoing ecological restoration in the Muli mining area in Qinghai, CNACG has developed an integrated approach combining geological stratum reconstruction with ecological function restoration. This method tackles global challenges such as permafrost rehabilitation and high-altitude vegetation regrowth.

Abandoned Mine Rehabilitation: Drawing from experience in restoring legacy mine sites across Shanxi, Shaanxi, Inner Mongolia, and Gansu, CNACG has developed a comprehensive system for topographical restoration, vegetation recovery, and soil erosion control.

Coalfield Fire Prevention: Based on fire mitigation efforts in the Shenfu Coalfield in Shaanxi, the agency has established a systematic approach to coalfield fire suppression.

Mine Water Pollution Treatment: CNACG has developed a water pollution management system and led projects such as the Wenhe River environmental restoration in Yangquan and groundwater pollution remediation in Hejin, Shanxi, contributing to broader ecological recovery in the Yellow River Basin.

The White Paper outlines CNACG’s key initiatives for further engagement in the region. These include assessing the full scope of coal and chemical mineral resources, evaluating the potential for greener coal extraction, expanding exploration efforts, and refining sustainable mining techniques. The agency also plans to develop scalable, replicable models for mine-site ecological restoration using geological modification technologies tailored to the region’s varied landscapes.

Jia Chunqu, Party Secretary of CNACG, emphasized that the agency will leverage China’s latest mineral exploration strategies to strengthen collaboration with provincial governments, industry partners, universities, and research institutions. As part of these efforts, CNACG aims to establish a “Yellow River Basin Ecological Protection and High-Quality Development Science and Technology Innovation Alliance” to drive major ecological restoration projects through joint initiatives.
