China has introduced its first comprehensive framework for product carbon labeling certification, marking a significant step toward establishing a unified national system. The State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) recently released the General Implementation Rules for Product Carbon Footprint Labeling Certification (Trial), along with the official China Product Carbon Footprint Label. This milestone reflects China’s progress in standardizing carbon footprint assessments across industries.
The General Implementation Rules outline key aspects of the certification process, including applicable product categories, certification methods, procedures, label design, and management requirements. These guidelines provide a standardized approach for verifying and displaying carbon footprint data, helping businesses and consumers make more informed decisions.
The China Product Carbon Footprint Label features a green design with a footprint symbol, visually representing the concept of carbon emissions. The label displays a product’s quantified carbon footprint in a clear digital format, making it easy for consumers to understand its environmental impact at a glance.
A unified carbon labeling system is expected to play a crucial role in China’s transition to a low-carbon economy. By establishing rigorous carbon footprint tracking and certification, the initiative encourages businesses to adopt greener production methods, reduce emissions throughout a product’s lifecycle, and improve overall energy efficiency.
Going forward, SAMR will work with other government agencies to enhance coordination and data sharing. Pilot programs will be expanded, with the goal of developing scalable, replicable best practices that support China’s broader green transformation.
