Anhui’s renewable energy sector reached a major milestone in 2024, with total installed capacity surpassing coal-fired power for the first time, making it the province’s largest energy source. Meanwhile, Anhui ranked second nationwide in new energy vehicle (NEV) production, underscoring its rapid growth and vast market potential. These insights were shared at the 2025 Anhui Business Conference’s New Energy Industry Development Forum and the inaugural meeting of the Anhui New Energy Chamber of Commerce.

“Anhui’s new energy and energy-saving industry has seen record-breaking growth for three consecutive years, with revenues surpassing 300 billion yuan in 2021, 400 billion yuan in 2022, and 600 billion yuan in 2023. In 2024, the industry’s revenue surged to 829 billion yuan,” said Luo Hong, Deputy Director-General of the Anhui Provincial Department of Ecology and Environment and head of the province’s New Energy and Energy-Saving Industry Task Force.

Luo highlighted Anhui’s growing competitiveness in key new energy sectors. The province now produces about one-fifth of China’s photovoltaic (PV) cells, half of the nation’s PV glass, and one-fifth of its PV modules. Ten of the world’s top 20 PV companies have invested in Anhui, helping to build a complete industry chain covering silicon wafers, cells, modules, inverters, system integration, and application solutions.

By the end of 2024, Anhui’s total installed renewable energy capacity had reached 60.85 million kilowatts, accounting for 49.1% of the province’s total power generation capacity and officially overtaking coal power. Solar energy makes up the bulk of this, with an installed capacity of 43.11 million kilowatts, while wind power stands at 7.74 million kilowatts. Looking ahead, Anhui’s new energy and green industries are expected to surpass the one-trillion-yuan revenue mark by the end of the 14th Five-Year Plan period, further solidifying the province’s position as a leader in China’s clean energy transition.
